Contours are only as good as the ground they describe. This release brings finer elevation data to your land where it exists, and is straight with you about where it doesn't.
Higher-resolution contours by plan
- On Pro and Founder, the contours on every map come from the best elevation data available for that property, such as 1 m LiDAR across much of the US, England, the Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand, and 5 m LiDAR in some Australian cities where the free source has none. Where there's nothing better, you get the free sources.
- On the free 7-day trial, one map gets high-resolution contours: the first map where better data exists. A map you kept from the address preview can be that map.
- On Free, and for later trial maps, contours use the freely available sources. Where better data exists for your property, the Contours panel says so and offers an upgrade.
Honest about the data
- The Contours panel names the real dataset and its true resolution, for example "US 3DEP LiDAR, 1 m" or "US 3DEP elevation (10 m)".
- Coverage is uneven. In regional Australia, contours mostly stay on the free 5 m or 30 m data.
- Exports credit each dataset with its own licence.
Regenerate, and downgrading
- Regenerate contours now always redraws from fresh data, handy right after upgrading.
- If you move to Free, the contours you've already drawn stay. Redrawing uses the free data, and a warning tells you first.
Contours that stay put
- After an app update, contours could appear blank until you reloaded. They now always reappear.
And throughout
- If AI detection is waiting for capacity, Fieldwalker now says so in plain language, and long runs stop at a clear time limit with a plain message.
